About Mudras:
Yoga mudras promote the flow of energy within the subtle body and the inner journey of self-discovery and healing.
The word Mudra comes from Sanskrit, where ‘mud’ means joy and ‘ra’ means to produce. Together, mudra signifies “that which produces joy and cheerfulness.” Originating from Hinduism and Buddhism, mudras are symbolic gestures that express the unspoken language of the soul. Mudras are used in Indian Classical arts such as Bharatanatyam, Mohiniattam, and Varma kalai.
In essence, mudras are not just hand gestures but a complete expression involving the whole body, forming closed energy circuits that direct pranic flow (life energy) throughout the body. The physical body is composed of five elements. According to ancient scriptures, each of our fingers is associated with one of the five elements:
• Thumb – Fire
• Index finger – Air
• Middle finger – Ether (Space)
• Ring finger – Earth
• Little finger – Water
An imbalance in any of these elements can disrupt the immune system and lead to illness. When a finger (element) is brought into with the thumb (fire), the energy is redirected and balanced, helping to restore health.
Usually, from 5 to 45 minutes is required to practice every day by using appropriate mudra with proper pressure and touch including sitting position and breathing.
However the effectiveness of the mudras not only depends on the practices, but it also depends on the eating habit, diet and the lifestyle of a person.
